Our Team

Philippe E. Berthoud came to the Retirement Financial Center from a diversified cultural background and work experience. He grew up in Aix-en-Provence, France and later played soccer professionally. He founded and ran a non-profit soccer ministry for seven years, where he developed strong business and leadership skills. Philippe graduated from Gordon College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics.

Philippe joined us in the fall of 2006. He is a financial advisor and a Registered Representative of United Planners Financial Services. He became the Registered Principal for this office in 2008. He holds the Series 7, 63, 65 and Series 24 licenses and is securities licensed in several states. He is also licensed for life and health insurance in Massachusetts.

Philippe and his wife have four active and talented children.
Scott Johnson is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®) and an Investment Advisor Representative of United Planners Financial Services, holding a Series 24, 7, 63 and 66 certifications and licensed in several states. He is also licensed for life and health insurance in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He has spent his entire career working with markets, first in commodities, and since 2000, in financial markets.

As an investor himself, Scott offers individual investment management as well as providing retirement plans to businesses. Sound investment choices, attention to fiduciary obligations, and an ability to provide thoughtful guidance to plan participants are the hallmarks of his plans. He is a fiduciary to his plans.

Scott and his wife, Jane, have two grown children with wonderful families of their own.
Kevin McNelly has been in the financial services field since interning with Tom Riquier during the summer of 1999. Kevin received a Bachelor of Science degree in General Business from Nichols College with a concentration in finance, marketing and management. Upon graduating, he joined a large insurance firm in Waltham where he expanded his practical experience and professional financial education and developed a strong ability to understand the financial concerns of families and to identify and communicate potential solutions.

Kevin established his own independent office specializing in developing and servicing health insurance plans for local businesses and brought this expertise to The Retirement Financial Center where he provides this important specialty. Through his business experience he has realized that the key to each relationship is quality service and open communication and he maintains focus on his clients needs, monitoring and assisting their individual progress. He is a Registered Representative with United Planners.

Kevin is a newlywed who enjoys skiing and snowboarding during the New England winters and the boating and beach activities that the beautiful island of Cape Ann offers throughout the summer.
Gordon Ulen, CPA is the head of our Tax Planning & Preparation Department and a Registered Representative with United Planners and holds Series 7 and 66 securities licenses. Gordon has a Bachelors degree in Business from UMass Lowell and an MBA from Suffolk University. Gordon has more than 30 years of experience running the financial operations of a wide range of for profit and not for profit companies.

Gordon is the Treasurer of the North Shore Technology Council, Inc., an organization dedicated to the promotion of the technology industry on the North Shore. Gordon is also Treasurer of North Shore InnoVentures, Inc., a not for profit company dedicated to helping Bio-Medical and Alternative Energy companies get started on the North Shore.

Gordon helps clients coordinate their investments and their taxes and teaches several classes for those interested in furthering their understanding Finances, Taxes and Business in general. He offers classes for New Business Owners, those thinking about starting a new business and those that desire a deeper understanding of tax laws and what opportunities they have to reduce their taxes.
